One practice wasn’t enough for Rick Tocchet to correct all that was wrong with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tocchet lost his debut as Tampa Bay coach when Tuomo Ruutu and Rod Brind’Amour scored in the shootout and Cam Ward stopped two shots to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory Sunday. “It’s a step in the right direction,” Tocchet said.

The Blues claimed forward B.J. Crombeen off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Crombeen had a goal and four assists, along with 26 penalty minutes, in 15 games with Dallas this season. He has a goal and six assists in 23 career games, all with Dallas. He was Dallas’ second-round selection, 54th overall, in the 2003 draft.

The Boston Bruins have been waiting for this kind of goal from Michael Ryder. The Maple Leafs were pressing for a tying score during the second period Monday night and it seemed only a matter of time before they would get it. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Ryder raced into the Toronto end, dragged the puck around a defender and scored with a high wrist shot.

The New York Rangers are always confident heading into a shootout, knowing Henrik Lundqvist gives them an excellent chance to win. Nikolai Zherdev scored the only goal in a shootout and Lundqvist denied all three Ottawa Senators shooters in New York’s 2-1 victory Monday night. The Rangers opted to shoot first and Zherdev beat Alex Auld between the pads.

Devin Setoguchi and the San Jose Sharks managed to grind out a quality road win Monday night. That kind of toughness is a big reason they lead the NHL with 33 points. Setoguchi had a power-play goal and an assist to help San Jose beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 in a physical game. “The emotions swung all over the place,” Sharks coach Todd McClellan said.

All eyes were on former New York Islanders goalie Roberto Luongo. All the cheering and name chanting rained down on the new guy — backup Joey MacDonald. The last few days have been pretty good for Ty Conklin. The Detroit Red Wings backup goaltender has started and won two consecutive games, sandwiched around the birth of his third child. Conklin made 20 saves for his fifth career shutout Monday night, Jiri Hudler and Niklas Kronwall each had a goal and an assist and Detroit beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0.

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will miss Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota because of an undisclosed injury. “It’s not a major injury,” coach Michel Therrien said Monday. “We just don’t want to take a risk.” Under rules enacted upon the recommendation of league general managers before this season, NHL teams are not required to disclose the nature of injuries.

The Colorado Avalanche signed 22-year-old center Paul Stastny to a five-year contract extension through the 2013-2014 season. St. Louis center Andy McDonald is expected to be sidelined eight weeks after breaking his left leg during a 3-2 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday. Blues coach Andy Murray said Monday that McDonald was hurt when he crashed into the corner boards late in the first period. MRI results revealed no further damage and surgery is not required.
